Live Review of the 'Tribute To David Lynch' gig - May 2007
GLYN BAILEY seems a bit of an odd man out here at first, being a bit on the cheerful and upbeat side - although his website's self description as an "egg-delivery man and soft-furnishings salesman" definitely has a little Lynchian oddness-of-normality feel.
There's nothing groundbreaking in his indie-folkish delivery, but there's always something worth listening to going on as he wanders some way from the bog-standard singer-songwriter comfort zones of love and loss, preferring themes such as school reunions and at one point the twelve men who went to the Moon.
"Groomed", however - the standout track from his own material - takes things back into dark territory, telling of preying paedophiles in a more alt.country Americana sort of style; then his take on "Blue Velvet" has the feel of a woozy, fucked-up pub singer which works rather well. He ends by flinging a red rose out into the crowd; sadly none of the ladies in the audience are quick enough - and anyway, throw anything in Dry Bar on one of these sorts of nights and you'd have a fair chance of hitting a member of Politburo, even if they're not actually playing. He does, and Nick spends the rest of the evening clasping it in a faintly demented looking way.
