TOYS FROM BALSA Review by Greenriver - June 2005
(Zurich-based music fanzine)
This CD arrived in the post from this English singer songwriter.
The CD doesn't begin promisingly, the first song is about giving oral sex to someone while thinking about someone else. The playing is as unsubtle as the subject matter, its very mainstream rock music, that could have been recorded anytime in the last 35 years. In a blindfold test of when it was recorded,I would have guessed 1985.
The CD gets worse on the second track, an uninvolving tune of family breakdown. Many of the other songs are relationship numbers, but I didnt get a feeling for the characters in the songs. The CD is well produced but its just not my taste, I wouldnt say it has no commercial potential though, as German commercial radio plays a lot of singer/songwriters of this style.
