TOYS FROM BALSA review, Americana.co.uk - June 2005

Glyn Bailey has a taste for the eclectic, and sometimes macabre, which he utilises to full effect on ‘Toys From Balsa’. Several of the lyrical themes are bizarre and far more interesting than standard boy meets girl mediocrity, while Bailey’s voice is always theatrical and interesting. At times he sounds a little like Warren Zevon.

The best songs on offer here are ‘Sorry (she went down on me but I thought about you)’ and ‘The Plastic Bag Song (facts)’ but ultimately far too many of the tunes meander on for 6 minutes plus without featuring any sort of hook.

‘Toys From Balsa’ is good in places but overall the quality is too erratic over the albums 75 minutes to really make an impression.
